Cubism and Its Histories

By :"David Cottington"
Published on 2004 by Manchester University Press

Category :"Art"

This work combines analysis of the different 'gallery' and 'salon' axes of the pre-1914 movement with an exploration of the experience of modernity in early twentieth-century Paris. It traces the construction of what came to be the dominant model of Cubism's stylistic interpretation and art-historical assessment, and provides an overview od recent challenges to this. This presents a narrative of Cubism's beginnings, consolidation and dissemination that takes into account not only what the styles and the movement signified at the time of its emergence but also the principal writings - from the polemics of Apollinaire to the semiotics of Rosalind Krauss - through which Cubism's significance for modernism has since been established.
